A teenager was killed after being hit by lightning in Etowah, Arkansas earlier this week.

16-year-old Steven Sheppard was volunteering at a church with his brother, just down the road from his house Tuesday night (July 1) when the storm rolled in.

The two tried to run back to their house to take cover from the storm, when lightning bounced off a tree and hit Steven, killing him instantly.

Steven's father, Nute Sheppard, said he was heartbroken after finding out what happened.

“I tried to wake him up, and I couldn’t. I was screaming,” Nute Sheppard said. “Thinking maybe he would come back to life, but I noticed his lips, and they were blue."

Friends and family will say goodbye to Sheppard at his funeral, scheduled for Thursday (July 3).

Etowah is located in Mississippi County, west of Osceola.
