FORT SMITH (KFSM)- Fort Smith Fire crews are investigating after an abandoned apartment building went up in flames early Tuesday morning (July 15).

Crews on scene said they got a call about the former Village Apartments complex, located at the intersection of Kinkead and 36th, burning around 2 a.m.

"Once the crews got on scene, they saw a lot of flames and smoke coming out of the complex here and just went to work," Battalion Chief Skip Mathews said.

Mathews went on to say that because of where the complex is located, crews had to work extremely fast to get the fire under control.

"There's a lot of homes in this area," Mathews said. "We had to block off the roads in the area while we worked to get it put out."

After about ten minutes, crews had the fire under control, according to Mathews. They were also able to keep the fire contained to just one apartment, Mathews said.

An investigation into the cause is now underway.

"There's no electric," Mathews said. "There's no gas. All of the apartments were boarded up. But right now, [the cause of the fire] is still under investigation."

Mathews said arson could be to blame; however, at this point, the fire marshal has not identified the cause of the fire.

No injuries have been reported.
