Muldrow police on Thursday arrested a man they say pretended to be the victim of an armed robbery in order to get officers to look for his missing car.

Matthew McCormack, 27, was arrested on suspicion of filing a false police report.

The Sallisaw, Oklahoma, man filed a report around 5:15 p.m. of an armed robbery in which a man had stolen his car and his girlfriend’s phone. McCormack told police he picked up a white male near a Muldrow Laundromat, and the man pulled a weapon near the intersection of Interstate 40 and Main Street, police said.

McCormack said the rider then took his car and drove off, according to police.

Authorities did not mention what kind of weapon McCormack allegedly told officers the rider used.

Officers who interviewed McCormack noticed several discrepancies in his original statement.

McCormack later confessed to authorities that he was missing his vehicle, but he made up the story of the robbery in order to get police to act on his report, according to police.
