VIRGINIA (WDBJ) – A federal appeals court in Virginia has upheld tax subsidies for low and middle-income families who get their insurance under Obamacare, according to affiliate station WDBJ.

A three-judge panel from the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Tuesday (July 22) unanimously rejected a claim that the law provides subsidies to just people who buy policies through state-run exchanges, WDBJ reported.

A total of 36 states are served by the federal insurance marketplace, according to WDBJ.

The ruling conflicts with another one issued Tuesday by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, which ruled two to one that subsidies are available only through state-run exchanges, WDBJ reported.
