BENTON COUNTY (KFSM) - The 110th Benton County Fair kicks off Tuesday. The four-day event will include carnival rides, pageants and farm animal competitions.

On Monday (Aug. 11), hundreds of home and fine arts entries got judged inside the Exhibit Hall. Entries included everything from cakes and cookies to jarred jams and vegetables.

Katie Rieff has worked in the home economics and fine arts division for 25 years.

"It's just a good opportunity to get together," she said "You make a lot of friends, and you meet new people."

Reiff said some departments saw an increase in entries submitted this year.

"I believe in the county fair," she said. "I think they provide an opportunity of education to the public on not just the rural life, but people's interests in canning, hand work and quilting."

Each entry will receive a white, red or blue ribbon. About 30 entries will get a 'Best of the Show' ribbon.

"Nothing is judged one item against another until we pull out all of the blue ribbons and pick a best of show," Reiff said.

Judging will be finished by opening day Tuesday. Those who submitted entries will be able to come to the Exhibit Hall at the fair and find out how they did.

"You just find all these neat recipes and are able to share what's supposed to be the best of the best," said Linda Chappell, a competition judge.

"I just love it, or I would not be doing it," said Rosa Thomas, another judge.

The gates to the fairgrounds are set to open Tuesday at 1 p.m. The opening day includes animal weigh-ins, goat shows, beauty pageants and several other events. The fair’s amusement carnival is set to open at 5 p.m.

The events continue throughout the week, lasting through Saturday.

Admission is $5 for those seven years old and older. Kids six and younger get in free.
