LITTLE ROCK (KFSM) – A tiny Asian insect called the Emerald Ash Borer has made it’s way to the Natural State, according to state officials. The insect is responsible for the deaths of tens of millions of trees in the U.S. since 2002. Now, state officials said they’re worries about Ash Trees in Arkansas.

The insects have been found in six counties, all in the southern part of the state, according to Sam Kim, an entomologist and the State Survey Coordinator for the Plant Board.

“It can migrate, but the quickest and fastest way that it’s moving this far south is by transportation of firewood,” Kim said.

For now, officials said the board is asking that all firewood be bought and burned locally to keep the trees safe.
