The backup quarterback can often be the fans' favorite player. That means Austin Allen might have picked up a few more fans on Saturday.

Allen, the younger brother of starting quarterback Brandon Allen, was named the teams' backup by coach Bret Bielema following the team's scrimmage Saturday afternoon.

Austin Allen edged freshman Rafe Peavey for the number two spot on the depth chart but he said it was the work he did between the ears that was just as important as the work on the field.

"Going in and improving everyday," Allen said. "Getting the playbook and really learning from (offensive coordinator) coach (Jim) Chaney, what he wants and the verbiage of the play calls and getting used to the speed of the game."
