It’s time to pucker up for National Lemonade Day. The refreshing drink was first invented in Mediterranean region in the 13th century. It was touted to treat colds and other ailments. Lemonade is also shown to help people prone to kidney stones in slowing development in a stone forming because of the high concentration of critic acid.

Need a basic lemonade recipe? Here’s what we found from Punchbowl.

 

Basic homemade lemonade recipe:

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup squeezed lemon juice (no seeds)
  • 3 to 4 cups cold water

All lemonade begins with simple syrup, which is just diluted sugar in water. It’s made by heating sugar and water in a saucepan until the sugar has dissolved. To extract the juice, you’ll need 4-6 medium to large lemons. Add the juice and sugar water to a pitcher and add the cold water. Refridgerate just enough to chill and serve when ready.

Recipe for homemade lemonade with real lemons and natural flavors:

  • 4 bags hibiscus tea
  • 2 cups of fresh mint
  • 3 cups basic homemade lemonade

Steep the tea in two cups of boiling water, add the mint and gently mash. Let the mixture cool and discard the tea bags and mint. Combine the tea and lemonade and serve with a sprig of mint and over ice.

Strawberry lemonade:

  • 1/2 pound strawberries (fresh or frozen), halved
  • 2 tbsp. lemon juice
  • 3 cups basic homemade lemonade

Blend the strawberries and lemon juice in a blender. Push through a sieve to remove all the seeds and chunks. Add the puree to the lemonade and serve chilled.
