SALLISAW (KFSM) - For boaters out on the lake, the Sequoyah County Sheriff's Office is cracking down this holiday weekend.

"The main thing is to make sure everyone has a good time and stays safe," said Sheriff Ron Lockhart. According to Deputy Charles House,"The other thing is looking for intoxicated boaters."

Labor Day is the last weekend to celebrate the summer season which means more people on boats out at the lake.

Friday (Aug.29) started deputies out patroling on Brushy Lake in Sallisaw to make sure everyone stays safe. "There's boats everywhere, it's dangerous especially when you mix alcohol with it,"said Lockhart.

They want to remind boaters not to drink while driving your boat. However, if you get pulled over. "Our boats are equipped with emergency equipment and sirens," according to House. "We like people to have a good time, but we also have to keep safety in mind."

According to Lockhart, "We mainly try to enforce the laws and make sure everyone drives safe."

By the middle of the weekend is when the conditions get more dangerous. "You have so many boats on the water so it gets rough after Saturday and Sunday, you really have to use precaution," said House.

Deputies started going out on the lake Friday and will patrol all throughout the weekend ending on Monday (Sept.1). Authorities in Sequoyah County will also be out patroling at Lake Tenkiller over the holiday weekend.
