FORT SMITH (KFSM)-More than 500 participants took part in the 20th annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s.

The 5K event took place at the Riverfront. Organizers said this was their biggest turnout yet.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, over five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s Disease, and over 60,000 patients affected live right here in Arkansas.

“There are not many lives in this area in our community that have not been affected by Alzheimer’s,” Liz Martin, volunteer said. “This is a way for families to get together and honor someone that has Alzheimer’s.”

Organizers said 60 percent of the proceeds raised will help people in Arkansas living with Alzheimer’s. The rest of the money will go towards research in finding a cure.

According to the Alzheimer’s Foundation, the disease is the only cause of death among the top ten causes of death without any known treatment cure or prevention methods.
