FORT SMITH (KFSM) - People in the River Valley paid their respects on Thursday (Sept.11). The Fort Smith fire department held a ceremony and a moment of silence at the time the south tower fell in New York City, thirteen years ago.

A special bell ceremony happened that meant something special for the firefighters. Also, readings concerning September 11, 2001 were presented and a bag piper played "Amazing Grace". According to Fire Chief Mike Richards, we set up this ceremony up so we don't foreget.

"We watched the events unfold on live television that morning, and we knew exactly what was going on at the time," said Richards. "We knew when the south tower collapsed and the north tower collapsed, without a doubt many people died, many being firefighters."

Area firefighters, police officers, medical personnel, and city leaders were all there to be in attendance.
