Greenwood Girls Win 6A Golf Title

Freshman medalist leads Lady Bulldogs to third state title in past five years

GREENWOOD (KFSM) - Greenwood is no stranger to championships. Whether it's girls basketball or football, titles are expected. Now you can add girls golf to the list of dynasties at the school.

The Lady Bulldogs built a 15-stroke lead after the opening round of the 6A state tournament and made that lead stay put on the final day as they won their third state championship over the past five years.

"It just means that all of our hard work has paid off for the year," senior Olivia Austin said. "Working as a team, it has earned us so much."

"It means a lot because your team worked hard all season and I think you just have to work really hard and have to learn to work together," Lexie Adams said.

With every championship golf team there is always one who takes charge and posts the low score to put themselves in contention for the individual. For Greenwood that girl was Sydnie Gamble who took medalist honors.

It's not completely rare that a player wins both medalist honors and a team state championship. It is rare when that player is only a freshman.

"I was really nervous on the first day just because this was my first state to go to but on the second day when I knew that we had a lead I was a little more confident in what I was doing," Gamble said.

That confidence should be at an all time high after this week and that can't be a good thing for the rest of 6A golf for the next three years.
