MADISON COUNTY (KFSM) – National Weather Service officials say an EF-1 tornado hit Madison County on Monday morning, leaving behind destruction, downed power lines and uprooted trees.

The announcement comes after officials examined the aftermath of the storm that also knocked power out for hundreds of households. They said the tornado hit four miles north of Hindsville in Madison County.

The Enhanced Fujita Scale rates tornadoes on a scale of 0 to 5, with 5 being the worst. An EF-1 tornado’s winds can reach 110 miles per hour, according to the National Weather Service.

Authorities initially reported winds of 60 miles per hour during the storms. The hardest hit areas were county roads 8340, 8460, 8380, 8201 and 8225, authorities said.

Sgt. Rusty Johnson is with the Madison County Sheriff’s Office. He said fallen limbs and uprooted trees blocked roadways, making it difficult for first responders to access homes that sustained damage.

“We were going from house to house making sure that the occupants were okay and nobody was hurt,” Johnson said.

While the storms left behind a lot of destruction, Johnson said it’s a miracle no one was injured in the storm.

“You’ve  got your friends, neighbors and family out here, and nobody was killed,” he said. “You can always re-build. This is a tough and resilient county. We will deal with it and move forward.”

Local woman Michelle Williams said she expects it will take some time for them to re-build, but they will work to put the pieces back together.

“There’s only one way, and that’s forward,” she said. “Can’t stay right here, because it’s heartbreaking. It really is.”
