FORT SMITH (KFSM) -  Officials at Union Christian Academy in Fort Smith will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony today to unveil renovations made to the private school.

The project started in 2010 when Karen Windsor, a mother of one of the students, decided to raise money to remodel the school kitchen. However, Windsor was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and passed away a year later.

Since then, school officials say they were determined to finish the project Windsor started, raising $500,000 to go towards renovations.

"Her memory, and her desire and passion went on. This past May we decided that it was probably time to do this remodel in honor of Karen," said Superintendent Paul Bridges, "So what she started has actually now come to completion and we've been able to open this beautiful cafeteria, a brand new kitchen, wonderful food services for all of our students. It's really an honor and a dedication for her efforts and what she started."

Bridges says renovations were also made to the classrooms and hallways.

This was the first major renovation for the school, which was built in the 1970s.
