FORT SMITH (KFSM)- The Sebastian County Humane Society often deals with overcrowding issues, so today (Oct. 25), they’re promoting adoptions with “Empty the Shelter”.
“What it’s basically about is trying to find every animal a home,” adoptions coordinator Terrance Richardson said. “We have well over 100 animals up for adoption right now, so we look at it as an opportunity as placing these animals in a home forever.”
Normally dogs cost $100, and cats are $50, but for Empty the Shelter, you can adopt any animal at the humane society for $20.
“With that $20 fee, everything still applies, so you still get a healthy animal that has everything already administered to it,” Richardson said.
Pets are still spayed or neutered; they come with microchips and have their basic vaccinations. Dogs will have undergone a heart-worm test, and all felines have been screened for leukemia.
“We have long term residents,” Richardson said. “We have some that’s only been up for [adoption for a few] months, so that’s kind of our goal and our mission is to make sure they find homes.”
The SCHS is extending their hours for the event as will. All 20 employees will be on the floor assisting customers. They’ll be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 25). Empty the Shelter got underway Friday (Oct. 24). They’ll go back to their normal hours next week.
