Police are investigating an incident in Houston, Texas in which a 3-year-old boy shot a family member in the face on Saturday.

20-year-old Patrick Sanders is listed in critical condition after suffering a point-blank gunshot wound to the head while sleeping on Saturday, the Houston Press reported.

Police believe Sanders was napping on the couch in the living room of his apartment when a handgun in his pocket slipped out and fell onto the floor. Sanders awoke to find it in the hands of the 3-year-old boy, police said.

The victim apparently tried to snatch the gun from the infant, but the weapon fired. Sanders was struck in the face.

The child was not injured during the incident, according to the paper.

Editor’s note: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated the child was three-months-old.
