GREENWOOD (KFSM) – Greenwood police posted a story to their Facebook page Friday warning of “pot-infused Halloween candy” and asking parents to carefully check their children’s treats.
The Greenwood Police Department posted the story from national police website PoliceOne.com, which states Halloween candy infused with marijuana is a growing problem and “a potentially deadly threat.” The story quotes a doctor saying, “Parents need to know and be aware that this stuff is not harmless to children.”
Shortly after posting the Facebook item, Greenwood police also posted three stories showing real occurrences of marijuana-laced candy, including one in 2011 that send a Little Rock teenager to the hospital and two such instances in Joplin and McDonald County, Mo.
“To think that it can’t happen here is wrong,” Greenwood police said in the Facebook post. “We suggest that parents check all candy and not allow consumption until it has been checked.”
Police also included a list of ways for parents to check their children’s candy, including looking for any lumps or bulges under the wrapper, puncture holes, ripped or loose wrappers, foreign objects, candy with a strange smell and candy brands parents have never heard of.
