FORT SMITH (KFSM) – Former U.S. President Bill Clinton was in Fort Smith drumming up support for democrats, speaking in support of both gubernatorial candidate Mike Ross and U.S. Senate candidate Mark Pryor.

“The only grow-together-work-together choices you have are Mark Pryor, Mike Ross and James Lee Witt,” Clinton said. “They will continue the legacy of Mike Beebe.”

Gubernatorial candidate Mike Ross focused his speech on education in Arkansas.

“If you're a parent and you got a four-year-old, and you want them in a Pre-K classroom, there should be a desk for them regardless of your income, regardless of your zip code,” Ross said.

Incumbent Senator Pryor said he has an independent voting record, and will work with republicans.

“Just because it's a democratic idea doesn't mean it’s a good idea. Just because it’s a republican idea doesn't mean it’s a bad idea. We need to take the best ideas, wherever they come from, and put them to work for our nation and our state,” Pryor said.

The last time the president was in Fort Smith was in 1996, according to the Democratic Party of Arkansas. A crowd of more than 1500 people welcomed him Sunday (Nov. 2).

The other candidates for Governor are Libertarian Frank Gilbert and Josh Drake with the Green Party.

Libertarian Nathan LaFrance and Green Party candidate Mark Swaney are also running for Senate.
