A fire fanned by strong wind gusts heavily damaged a house east of Elkins on Monday afternoon (Nov. 10), fire officials said.

No one was hurt in the blaze, officials said.

The fire, which began around noon, burned about half of a split-level house, including the living room, at  11958 Antoinette Road, said Elkins Fire Chief J.D. DeMott.

Wind gusts of up to 40 mph fed oxygen to the flames, requiring the fire department to use 5,000 to 6,000 gallons of water to extinguish the blaze, officials said.  The half of the house that wasn’t burned in the fire received heavy smoke damage, DeMott said.

A woman who lives at the house noticed the fire and ran to a neighbor’s home, where she phoned authorities, officials said.
