There is a new scholarship contest opportunity designed specifically for Arkansas high school seniors interested in becoming a STEM (science, technology, engineering or math) professional or math or science teacher. Three scholarship contest winners will each receive a $5,000 scholarship package which includes: $2,500 tuition credit at the U of A, UCA, or UALR; $1,500 laptop; $750 book voucher; and a $250 graphing calculator.
In a statewide initiative to develop STEM professionals and math and science teachers Arkansas has adopted the UTeach program. The program was originally created in 1997 by The University of Texas at Austin, and was soon replicated by other states as a new way to prepare secondary science, math and computer science teachers.
UTeach Arkansas incorporates a modified teaching curriculum into participating student’s studies. UTeach students can still obtain a degree in four years, while also attaining certification as a STEM teacher. Student loan forgiveness is also a possibility for some UTeach students.
