FORT SMITH (KFSM)- High school playoff season is underway, just in time for some of the coldest weather this fall, but athletic department officials at Northside High School in Fort Smith have a strategy in place to stay warm Friday (Nov. 14) night.

Athletic Trainer Sherry Riggins, who has worked for the school for 20 years, said the weather is not usually this cold during playoffs.

The Northside Grizzlies took on Little Rock Catholic High School at 7 p.m. when temperatures dipped below freezing and stayed there for the rest of the game.

"We didn't have such a drastic change in temperatures [last year] like we did this year," Riggins said.

Head Football Coach Mike Falleur said the school is ready with heaters set up for the players on the sidelines and Riggins said layers are key to keeping players warm.

"It's better to layer with thinner things," Riggins said.
