First-Grader Says Lunch Lady Told Him, ‘Guess What? You Can’t Have A Lunch’

WASHINGTON (KCPQ) The only thing 7-year-old Xavier loves more than his math homework are his fruits and vegetables. But Xavier's parents say they're concerned because on Oct. 20, the first-grader was denied school lunch at Cascade View Elementary.

“It was a sack lunch. It was in a bag, she was passing it around to everybody. The lunch lady said, ‘Guess what, you can’t have a lunch.’ She said that. She said I can't have a lunch,” Xavier said.

Xavier is on the free lunch program. But instead of getting a meal, Xavier was sent home with a grumbling tummy and a slip saying he had a negative lunch balance, Xavier's dad, Eric, told KCPQ.

“My question was never answered as to why he was denied. I was very mad. I couldn't believe it happened. It happened to me as a child and I could still feel that hurt and I can only imagine what he went through,” Eric said.

The Snohomish County School District said they are investigating. The school spokesperson says whenever a student’s account is negative $20 or more, the child gets a cheese sandwich and unlimited fruits and veggies from the salad bar, along with a drink.

Eric said this does not apply to his son.

“We get funds from the state, food stamp wise, which means his balance should be covered,” Eric said.

Eric said he's angry over how the school handled the situation and he's concerned over how it's affected Xavier. He is now considering removing his children from the school.

I don’t blame this parent for being angry. This also happened to me when I was in school. I remember the feeling that I had when the other kids looked at me and asking why I didn’t have any food.
I also can still feel my tummy rumbling watching the other kids eat.
I also remember one of the lunch ladies would let me charge my food when I was in high school. I think she paid my charges for me. I will remember Sherry for the rest of my life.
And to this young man, I hope it never happens again.

My daughter is a single mother with disablities of her own and is raising 2 autistic sons. She receives food stamps for her and the boys and they don’t amount to much. She does not drink, smoke or do drugs. She struggles to provide for them and it is VERY WRONG FOR YOU TO ASSUME THAT ALL PEOPLE RECEIVING ASSISTANCE DO! She receives enough SSI for the one son to cover here rent and utilities. And the food stamps don’t cover lavish foods; she shops at salvage grocery stores and discount stores.

Sue, you didn’t mention anything about the children’s Father? In this day and time, You as an adult make your own Bed!! why would anyone and I mean anyone Have Children!! if you can’t afford to take care of them! I can’t feel sorry for adults or children brought into this world by STUPID PEOPLE!

  • Cassie

Something that a lot of you are failing to realize…even if they were on drugs, smoke, or on booze which I don’t think they are. That CHILD deserves a meal. I dont think any kid should go hungry.

    • JEK

THAT CHILD SHOULD BE TAKEN FROM THEM if the adults are doing those things, don’t just feed the children! geeeeeeeze. I have yet to see anyone Walk to the Welfare Office Not ONE! what does that tell ya!

    • JEK

You are right Cassie, BUT! It’s not anyone’s responsibility BUT THE PARENTS! You are missing the point here!

rules are in place for a reason!!!

The reason trash has kids is to get them on SSI and food stamps. That way the mother is guaranteed some income for the next 18 years. 90% of the time the Mother doesn’t know who the father is. It is all about taking all you can get from the tax payers.
Legit assistance is needed, but people are milking the system.
I do feel that the child should have been allowed to eat regardless, because it isn’t his fault that his parent is trailer park disability trash.

Our tax dollars at work, folks.
BOBREAL, you are a real piece of work.

I too had this happen to me as a child. The reasons why are irrelevant to me. Public schools, funded externally, a child gets fed. Period.

Those kids shouldn’t have to worry about an account. However, an inmate should. Start an account for them-A child is required to be in school. An adult in jail? No.

Bet there is a lot more to this story than is being reported. Just reading these comments leads me to ask this question, Just when is enough enough? When is it time for our society to insist that parents are responsible for their own kids? This idea of supporting a culture that expects hand outs at every turn has divided this country for too long. The producers are getting worn out! To you “givers”, give of your own not ours!

No child should go hungry. it don’t matter what the parents do. i would rather my tax paying dollars go to feed a hungry child at school than for it to go for something i disagree with. people have a heart, this is a child. (WWJD)

No child should ever be denied food. Jesus said, “Whatever you do to the least of these…”–remember that, Bible-waving republicans? Oh yeah, Ayn Rand is the one you really follow.

    • Barmey Rubble

I’m quite sure the Bible also has a story about showing others how to fish so they can take care of themselves. Remember that, flag-burning, America-hating liberals.

  • Barmey Rubble

So the father stated the state feeds his child. Just another example where you can’t even rely on the government to feed your kids. Moral of the story – get off your a** and feed your own kids.

FREE LUNCH PROGRAM……. Here is my solution. If a child is receiving a free lunch everyday. The parents should be required to do community service to pay for it. Maybe then, parents would start giving their kids some lunch money. What would it be a couple dollars a day? Our problem is we give people free housing, medical, food etc. etc. Make them do some work for their community. Every person no matter their situation can do something !! It maybe as little as pick up trash on the courthouse lawn, stuff envelopes for a charity…. I cannot understand why someone does not want to be a productive citizen. What makes them so special that they want everyone else to provide for them they are just LAZY !!!

  • Tammi

I am not going to judge the parents since I do not know their story. I worked many years in the school cafeteria and seen this happen a lot. Not sure why he was denied if he was on the free lunch program ( you get put on the free lunch program automatically with you food stamp case # ) and even if his account was negative he should have been offered a peanut butter or cheese sandwich with a milk. I believe this lady should be fired for being so cruel and heartless to this child. I could never look at a child and say they were not going to eat today. With the amount of food they trash after lunch service there is no reason he couldn’t..

God bless the little children. Red yellow black and white, they are precious in his sight.
Woe unto any man who mistreats a child.

    • arnold fudpucker

Especially true for irresponsible people for having kids they don’t want to take care of right? I think the productive people in this country are tired of providing for these bums. Also tired of the liberal political pukes buying their votes using the public trough as their personal piggy bank.

  • Matt Mink

Maybe the parents should uh, duh, take responsibility and remember their child’s lunch money. Leeching off taxpayer money and then complaining about it? Give me a break.

  • Springdale mom

I think this child should of been feed. But it makes me mad reading his dad saying he’s on free lunch it should be covered. My children do not get free lunch and I can tell you they both have been denied school lunch. Once my sons acct was negative 10 cents in. They gave him 2 slices of bread & a piece of cheese nothing to drink. He didn’t eat it. Who could choke that down with nothing to drink. Now in high school & jr high they are given nothing. They go hungry. I have to put $100 in there lunch acct every 2 months. My question is. Do the kids on free lunch deserve better treatment then others?

What’s sad is majority of everyone on here and commentators on other postings are all trying too hard to shine and wear their righteous badge. These public schools waste more money on food that they just throw in the garbage that the tax payers pay (regardless, if you had a child or not), and it shouldn’t have hurt them one bit to provide a child a meal despite the fact he or she didn’t have lunch money in their account.
