Church Gets Money For Ad In Response To Atheist Group’s Billboard

SPRINGDALE (KFSM) – An Alma church has purchased a digital billboard in Springdale as a response to a national atheist group running an anti-religion message on the same billboard, the church announced Tuesday (Dec. 9).

Grace Church will run the billboard from Wednesday through Dec. 24, with the message, “Questions, Doubts, Curiosity? All welcome at Grace.”

“The ad will start on Wednesday and it will run for two weeks,” said pastor Devon Walker. “It’s been exciting we were able to raise all the funds for it and the whole idea was if we can’t raise the funds we are not going to do it.”

Church leaders vowed Dec. 1 to purchase a billboard message nearby the atheist billboard. The church announced Tuesday it had gathered the money needed for the message. The billboard is costing the church $900.

“We had people who gave inside the church but we’ve also had support outside of it,” Walker said. “We had people from Texas and Florida who’ve called us and been able to support financially.”

Church leaders said the digital message is in response to an advertisement for American Atheists on the same billboard that states, “Dear Santa, All I want for Christmas is to skip church! I’m too old for fairy tales.” The billboard shows a girl in a Santa hat and advertises the group’s national convention in Memphis, Tenn., in April.

The billboard is part of a “firebrand-style” campaign launched in multiple Bible Belt cities including Memphis, Nashville, St. Louis and Fort Smith, according to a post on the American Atheists website. The group also plans to put up a billboard in Milwaukee.

Danielle Muscato, public relations director for American Atheists, told 5NEWS the billboards are aimed at in-the-closet atheists who are pressured to observe religious traditions during the holidays. He said the billboards are to let them know it is O.K. to doubt the way they were raised and think for themselves.

Muscato said he welcomes the church’s billboard, saying he advocates people being able to think for themselves on whether to believe in any, or no, religion.

Grace Church placed a statement about its own billboard message on its website, stating, “Our goal is not to oppose (American Atheist’s) message, but rather to respond with love and support. We actually welcome their desire to support those who have felt alienated by believers and start discussion between and among the atheist and Christian communities.”

I’m not religious but i have to give props to the church for their reaction to the sign, by giving people an option.. instead of protesting/forcing them to take the sign down or death threats which does happen with some religious groups..

      • Jesus and Pals

Well said Paul. So let me get this straight. You religous folks believe that God, the almighty creator, had to send Jesus to be crucified in order for you to be forgiven of your sins? That is about the dumbest thing I have ever heard!!! Look people, the year is 2014, not 0014. The stories in the Bible which was written by man, not by God, are nothing but fiction. The authors didn’t even have last names or social security numbers. They all believed the world was flat and that monsters were waiting at the edge of the ocean. They believed in a talking snake….that is the most idiotic thing I have ever heard, a talking snake… LOL LOL LOL LOL

      • Ethan

You do realize you just lost all credibility right? If you can’t do your research before stating something you just make yourself look stupid; the books of the bible are written by Man, but they are inspired by God.

  • REALLY????

So they passed the collection plate to have a “mine is bigger than yours” contest? I’m sure this is a worthwhile way to spend that money. After all, people that look for help from churches to eat or get clothes, can find shelter under that billboard.

    • YES! REALLY!!

Interesting point… of course, every group or business could take the money they use for billboards and do something to help those in need. Why is that you only seem disturbed this one billboard bought by one church? The people that donated to have the billboard put up knew exactly what the money was going for. Based on the info that I read here… this is not any kind of contest. And both groups stated they welcome the other billboard. If you want to be a ‘free thinker’… then learn to think before you make such ignorant statements.

      • REALLY????

How is voicing my OWN PERSONAL OPINION an ignorant statement? However, to answer your question, I’m “disturbed” by it because I wonder where was this church’s billboard BEFORE the Atheist group displayed theirs? Why are you so disturbed by my personal opinion?

    • Christianity is dying

This is evidence that Christians have insecurity issues about their beliefs. If they truly believe in God and the Bible, there is no need to validate that belief by going to battle with the Atheists, just sit back and let your imaginary GOD handle it.

  • Annie

When will this country dump fairy tales? Those of those who don’t believe in them are pounded over the head by them constantly and we have no choice but to take it. But we don’t like it. If you want to be religious, fine. But stop being bigots and justifying it with your religion, k?

    • H.T.II

Classic “pot calls the kettle black”
And you really think atheists behave any better? At practically every turn they’re always in religious people’s face protesting and trying to otherwise ram there own “fairytales” down others throats as well if not more so than the Churches.

From their evolutuon nonsense falsely called “science” we are regularly forced to swallow in the schools, to their constant legal challenges of any public displays of religion, yet they hypocritically advertise their beliefs in public like this all the time. To their customary nasty and hate filled demeanor and rhetoric toward Christianity. So no, atheists are in absolutely no position to criticise religion or anything else for that matter, and many are frankly among the biggest horse’s patoots you’ll find.

      • Tony Johnson

So let me get this straight: You are stating publicly that evolutionary biology isn’t science? You’ll have to excuse thinking rational people (including the Catholic Church) from ignoring you and your biblical conclusions.

Christians have a had a free ride in this country for 200 years —-get over yourselves already.

      • Paul

Yes.. They absolutely behave better.. They don’t force you to believe in anything.. Unlike bible beaters.. They are only “in your face” because they have had their fill of Christianity shoved down their throats.. See how that works?? Don’t force your religious nonsense on people and they won’t fight back.. Kinda make sense!! And please learn how to spell.. It may make your arguement a tad more compelling!!

      • H.T.II

        @Tony Johnson
        Absolutely, in both public or private;
Evolutionary biology is a complete fraud and not only unscientific, but really an insult to it. And if you believe in it, you are neither scientific nor a rational thinker. Oh you may think you are, maybe even sincerely so, but your not.
Just to name a few un-scientific and patently absurd premises of your beliefs. “Something comes from nothing?,” “Life spontaneously springs from non-life?,” “Intelligence comes from un-intelligence?,” “A big cosmic explosion and an Earth and universe evolve out of it?” (Hey, if you drop a big bomb on a Home Depot or something do you think houses and other buildings will eventually evolve out it? … I don’t think so). “Random unguided forces do useful work?” “You come from a monkey?,” “Random genetic mutations improve living organisms?” “One basic kind of species can produce another kind outside its own?” “Matter spontaneously improves upon itself?”
No, none of this nonsense is scientific, rational, or logical, and those who promote such lies should be ashamed of themselves to say the least for misleading people worldwide with such monumental frauds and lies.

Also, don’t misunderstand me, though a sincere Bible student, I am not supporting Christendom’s Churches or the other major organized religions with their many un-scriptural doctrines, practices, and pagan holidays like Christmas. But to merely point out that the atheists are in no better shape, and what they believe in and way they act is actually as bad or worse than the “fairytale” beliefs and behavior of the religions they so gleefully love to criticize and poke fun at.
Thus “pot calls the kettle black.” So I’m afraid it is you who may need to get over yourself.

Are you a scientist? Do you study this material everyday? Why does an overwhelming majority of scientists believe in evolution? Yes.. different strains of DNA stray and form other types of life.. Why do polar bears have white hair instead of brown or black..why do chimps and humans have 99% of the same DNA.. Why do men not look like wooly mammoths anymore..things evolve and adapt..Something somebody brainwashed like yourself can’t fathom..since you’re a student of the bible I guess you think the world was created in 6 days as well… And a man lived in a whale for however many days you Jesus lovers think..didn’t a man also live for 900 years? Your religion like all is a joke.. No better-no worse than any of the other 1000’s of gods that have been worshiped over time.. It’s funny that of all the gods out there you don’t believe in any of them except one.. And of course through “faith” yours is the only one.. Get real and get off your religious high horse!!

You are confusing your willful ignorance of evolutionary biology with a factual rebuttal of the subject. While I understand that many creationists believe the theory of evolution to be false, their belief alone does not constitute a retroactive nullification of the numerous successful predictions derived from theory, nor does the belief of creationists erase the extensive collection of multiple independent lines of evidence (such as the fossil record, the genetic record and observations of taxonomy) all consistent with established lineages of common descent.

Your claims that “life springs from non-life” is a part of the subject of biological evolution, when in fact such a concept has never been a part of the theory of evolution (even Mr. Charles Darwin identified it as a separate concept in his original book regarding the subject) and that “a big cosmic explosion” (which is in fact a substantial misstating of the Big Bang theory, which is itself entirely separate from biological evolution) is somehow a part of a theory of biology are common misconceptions held by those who have never actually studied evolution, but who somehow believe themselves capable of “knowing” evolution to be false despite their complete ignorance of the subject.

      • H.T.II

        @Paul
        >>Are you a scientist?

Whether one is a scientist or not, you still have to prove what you say. And evolution advocates fall flat in the area actual proof for what they assert. Being a scientist notwithstanding.

        >>Do you study this material everyday?

If everything evolutionists have claimed so far have been nothing but a steady train of lies and bogus material, is it necessary to keep playing their games by a daily study of their shenanigans?

        >>Why does an overwhelming majority of scientists believe in evolution?

Pride, prejudice, biases, personal agendas (usually of the atheist type), fear of ostracism, all sorts of things. None of which are truly scientific reasons beyond merely claiming it is the point

        >>Yes.. different strains of DNA stray and form other types of life..

But other forms of life don’t come from the same species

        >>Why do polar bears have white hair instead of brown or black..why do chimps and humans have 99% of the same DNA.

The point is they are all polar bears, chimps, and humans and each one produces according to their own basic kind generation after generation. Their can be variety within a basic kind, but one kind cannot crossover and produce another as evolution contends.

        >> Why do men not look like wooly mammoths anymore..

Beyond mere artistic’ speculative drawings and conceptions, what real evidence proves man was ever a woolly mammoth?

        >> things evolve and adapt.

They may adapt environmentally, but they do not evolve as they still remain the same species.

        >> Something somebody brainwashed like yourself can’t fathom..since you’re a student of the bible I guess you think the world was created in 6 days as well…

Your ad hominems don’t work. And no I do not believe the earth was created in six literal days, nor does the Bible really teach such a thing.

        >> And a man lived in a whale for however many days you Jesus lovers think..didn’t a man also live for 900 years?

The Bible makes no mention of a “whale” The original language words used in scripture simply refer to a “large fish” The exact species is unknown. But your mockery is actually illogical. What … an all-powerful God, creator of the entire universe, can’t preserve the life of a human being inside a huge fish as a form of punishment to someone if he wants to? And humans were originally created to live forever before the fall into sin and death, so 900 years is nothing.

        >> Your religion like all is a joke.. No better-no worse than any of the other 1000’s of gods that have been worshiped over time..

You know nothing of my religion, but I know a lot about yours. and if there are any jokes to be had I’m afraid they are on you.

        >> It’s funny that of all the gods out there you don’t believe in any of them except one.. And of course through “faith” yours is the only one.. Get real and get off your religious high horse!!

No high horse here, The reality is, if all humans actually followed the one true God (YHWH) and obeyed his commandments, instead of all the mass of confusing un-biblical religious and secular teachings of humans like your proffer, this world wouldn’t be in the hopeless mess its in.

      • H.T.II

        @DIMENSIO0

        >> You are confusing your willful ignorance of evolutionary biology with a factual rebuttal of the subject.

What real “factual rebuttals” are there beyond that you conveniently try to exclude certain areas from the subject of evolutionary biology because you know think it will help your cause?

        But it won’t …

        >> While I understand that many creationists believe the theory of evolution to be false, their belief alone does not constitute a retroactive nullification of the numerous successful predictions derived from theory, nor does the belief of creationists erase the extensive collection of multiple independent lines of evidence (such as the fossil record, the genetic record and observations of taxonomy) all consistent with established lineages of common descent.

First, I do not support creationism. While they are closer to the truth than evolutionists, their hyper-literal interpretation of scripture actually does a disservice to God and the Bible they seek to defend. And can you name any of these “successful predictions” the theory has supposedly produced as I’ve found none?

I also find no lineages of common descent in the fossil record. To the contrary, but that of a sudden “explosion of life” in the strata with many types of species as though from out of nowhere. Fully distinct from one another with no transitional links between them.

I know about the limits some evolutionary biologists attempt to draw, and its really nothig more than a cop-out strategy, But be that as it may, even excluding the question of origins, what real proof can you offer in support.of the evolution of life? As everywhere I see confirms the Bible’s position that all species, humans, animal or plant, are separate and reproduce according to their own kind. There is variation within the same basic kinds, but no crossing over into another kind or any evidence of lineal descent of multiple species from a common progenitor one.

      Annie,
I’m hoping you DON’T buy gifts for the “Holidays” or do any black Friday shopping. If so, you have just contradicted yourself. Long before it became a “commercialized holiday season” It was called CHRISTMAS. Please look up the root word in that and decide which side of the fence your on. If you don’t believe in God, then stop celebrating the holidays.

      • dimensio0

Prior to the popularity of Christianity, the time of year was celebrated as a Pagan holiday. Christians co-opted the holiday celebration, inserting a claim of the birthdate of their messiah (despite no evidence to support the claim).

I hear SOME Atheist talk about how Christians are judgmental, yet, I’ve heard/seen plenty of Atheist tell religious people they are stupid to believe in someone who is make believe.
Atheist don’t want anyone pushing religion down their throat, yet there are Atheist who push their opinions down others throats as well. People need to stop JUDGING .PERIOD.
Stop saying all Christians are judgmental
Stop saying all Atheist are close minded.
We ALL have a brain that forms our own thoughts, some people need proof (with their own eyes) to believe in something.
Some people have faith, and believe in something greater, and no one should be judged, or put down for thinking differently than the person beside them, there are over 2,400 religions, we all can’t be right. Billions of people in the world, and people are allowing themselves to cut themselves off from people and put other people down simply because they don’t believe the same thing, does, or does not exist, it’s ridiculous in my opinion.

  • H.T.II

    @Paul
Oh please ….don’t try and tell me atheists behave any better in this world,
Don’t even attempt to go there….

Atheist governments and societies for example have among the worst track records of them all for repressively pushing their beliefs off on others and have inflicted a terrible scourge on humanity. In the 20th century alone eclipsing the bad conduct of all the religious based countries preceding them up until then.

Their adherents are largely intolerant, narcissistic, racist (Yes that too), discourteous and insulting to others who don’t agree with them, etc. you name it, you do it all as bad as the most ardent religionists.

And what misspellings are you referring to?

    • dimensio0

Please demonstrate that a majority of atheists behave as you assert. Obviously, you must have access to research supporting your claim, as otherwise your claim would be a completely unsubstantiated accusation equal in credibility to a claim that a majority of Christians desire to molest children.

    • God is dead

If my knowledge of history serves me correct, I believe that Christians were responsible for the Salem witch trials in which thousands of innocent women were murdered, burned alive for supposedly being witches. Religion is a terrible disease that must be destroyed before the world can ever move forward in harmony.

This billboard debate actually makes me happy. The right to free speech is demonstrated in these billboards. I served in the world’s greatest military and I am proud to see the exchange of differing ideas. Perfect example of what our military protects: I may not agree with what you say but, I will die defending your right to say it.
