FORT SMITH (KFSM) - An apartment complex in Fort Smith caught fire early Tuesday (Dec.9) morning causing residents to be evacuated.  The Shadow Brook apartment complex is located on Oakview Drive in Fort Smith.

"It's sickening," Barbara Reichard told 5NEWS as she salvaged what she could. "I really don't know what kind of emotions I have right now."

Her family questions whether or not their smoke alarm was working.

"I just want to sit on the floor and cry," Reichard said.

Fort Smith Fire Department Battalion Chief said the fire started around 3:00 a. m. on the first floor of the building.  Three people were asleep inside the apartment where the fire is believed to have originated.  They were all able to make it out fine.

"Whoever is renting the apartment it is their responsibility as it would be if they owned the place to periodically go in and check their units to make sure they are in fact working," Fire Marshal Tommy Bishop said.

Crews said that smoke did spread to other apartments but the fire didn't. 5NEWS spoke to the three people that live inside the apartment. They said they have no idea how the fire could've started.

No word yet on what started the fire.
