CBS News – A 2-year-old boy accidentally shot and killed his mother after he reached into her purse at a northern Idaho Wal-Mart and her concealed gun fired, authorities said Tuesday.

Kootenai County sheriff’s spokesman Stu Miller told The Associated Press the woman was shopping with her son and three other children. Her family had come to the area to visit relatives, he said.

The woman, whose identity was not released, had a concealed weapons permit. Miller said the young boy was left in a shopping cart, reached into the victim’s purse and grabbed a small caliber handgun, which discharged one time.

“It appears to be a pretty tragic accident,” Miller said.

The woman’s husband was not in the store when the shooting happened at about 10:20 a.m. Miller said the man arrived shortly after the shooting. All the children were taken to a relative’s house.

The shooting occurred in the Wal-Mart in Hayden, Idaho, a town about 40 miles northeast of Spokane, Washington.

The store closed and was not expected to reopen until Wednesday morning.

Brooke Buchanan, a spokeswoman for Wal-Mart, said in a statement the shooting was a “very sad and tragic accident.”

“We are working closely with the local sheriff’s department while they investigate what happened,” Buchanan said.

Hayden is a politically conservative town of about 9,000 people just north of Coeur d’Alene in Idaho’s northern panhandle.

Walmart issued this statement Tuesday afternoon, reports CBS News KREM in Spokane, Washington:

“A very sad incident occurred at our store today involving the death of a female customer. We are fully cooperating with the Kootenai County Sheriff’s deputies as they investigate this matter.”

The more guns there are, the more bullets will be fired–it’s that simple. I’ve said it before–people can’t drive cars, yet the NRA wants them all to have guns.

The more knifes there are the more people will cut themselves, the more cars there are the more people will crash them, the more booze and cars there are the more people get drunk and kill other people, the more bleach under the sink there is the more poisoning of children, and . . . and yeah! We need to live in a world where no accidents ever happen. Where the government takes care of all our needs maybe one day in America they will make a bunch of laws protecting us from ourselves so nothing bad ever happens. Hey Horace that’
s some pretty good kool-aid man.

This is a sad accident but I’m sorry to all you gunbanners out there. This is not the right to carry a firearm at fault here.It is the person’s very bad, reckless, irresponsible decision to put a purse with a loaded gun at the reach of a two year old’s fault, that is the culprit here nothing more if it would have been a knife or mace or grenade or self destruct button it will still fall on the same thing VERY BAD LAPSE OF JUDGEMENT. No disrespect to the mother or family this is a sad event. But for the people that want to yell GUN CONTROL GUN CONTROL!! Your , our founding fathers knew the importance of the right to bear arms that’s why it’s in there, do some reading and stop trying to take very important rights away from us Americans if you want less guns move to China I bet the only people with guns there is the government, but alas that’s why it’s run by tyrants.

It will come as pleasant – or unpleasant, I suppose – news to those who only get their news from wacky, paranoid websites, but many NON-tyrant counties in the world with low death rates from guns also have strong gun laws on the books.
In the meantime, maybe ya’ll can write “For the Greater Good” sympathy cards to the family who has lost a mother . . .

This woman was stupid enough to leave a loaded gun within the reach of a child, so Darwin scores a nice point here. So very glad the kid shot her instead of an innocent person.
