FAYETTEVILLE (KFSM)- The Northwest Arkansas Martin Luther King Jr. Committee has organized several events to honor Dr. King’s legacy.

There will be a Youth Prayer Breakfast at the Janelle Hembree Alumni House on the University of Arkansas campus. It starts at 8 a.m.

After the breakfast, there will be a march at 11:15 a.m. The meeting spot is at the Walton Arts Center parking lot and marchers will head to the University of Arkansas.

Danielle Wood, who’s part of the leadership at the NWA MLK Council, said the goal is to promote unity, peace and service.

“It wasn`t about being disruptive, it was about showing exactly what are we trying to do as individuals to do the right thing, to come together as brothers, to have unity in our community and that`s one of the things the march tries to do,” Wood said.

The march started almost two decades ago, according to Wood.

“We started out with a very small group needing to do this over 19 years ago when it first started,” she said. “We have grown to probably over a thousand people show up at anytime even when its warm weather, cold weather.”

“We are continuously getting support for this event,” Woods said.

The city of Fayetteville plans to honor one of their employees that exhibits the spirit and legacy of Dr. King.
