FORT SMITH (KFSM) – Fort Smith Mayor Sandy Sanders signed a proclamation with Fort Smith Schools today concerning the need for students to gain career and technical training.

“This proclamation will recognize the job that the school system is doing in career and technical education for our students,” Sanders said.

As part of their education, students in classes like Business, Family and Consumer Science and Marketing learn trade skills which will help them later in life.

“Not everyone is a four-year college student,” Sanders said. “These classes help students prepare to earn a two-year certificate.”

Sanders went on to say that these classes are critical in today’s society.

“It’s very important that our students have that training and that background for whatever career or trade they pick,” Sanders said. “These classes prepare those students for jobs that are forecast to grow the fastest over the next decade. It’s these jobs are the backbone of our economy.”

Sanders signed the proclamation Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. at Southside High School. Dozens were in attendance for the event, including students serving as district and state officers.
