LITTLE ROCK (KFSM) – Gov. Asa Hutchinson has formed a council to review Common Core education standards, according to a news release.

Through executive order, Hutchinson formed the Governor’s Council on Common Core Review, a group chaired by Lt. Gov. Tim Griffin, the release states.

The council will be comprised of 16 members including educators, parents, business leaders and students all appointed by Hutchinson. Online applications for the council will be accepted through Feb. 20. To apply, click here. Accepted candidates will be announced at the start of March, Hutchinson said.

“We are looking for Arkansans who are committed to high standards in education and who have experience with the Common Core, including educators, parents, business leaders and students,” Hutchinson said.

In early summer the council will be asked to provide an initial recommendation on Common Core education standards. Later recommendations from the council will be expected in the fall, the release states.

“I’ve asked the Lieutenant Governor to head the council as I know he believes in high academic standards and has a vested interest in the success of Arkansas students,” Hutchinson said. “I recognized early on that I wanted to utilize the talents of Lieutenant Governor Griffin. He has been a partner with me as we proceeded with the tax initiative and other legislation. This was a natural follow-up.”
