MOUNTAINBURG (KFSM) – Former Mountainburg Mayor Ralph Bryant remained in critical condition Wednesday, a day after police say his teenage son beat him with an ax handle.

Mountainburg emergency crews responded Tuesday to the 900 block of Cedar Street in reference to an injury. Bryant, former mayor and police chief for the city, was flown to Washington Regional Medical Center in serious condition, with multiple lacerations and a broken eye socket, a family member told 5NEWS.

Police on Wednesday said Bryant was in critical but stable condition after undergoing surgery.

Mountainburg police said they took Bryant’s 17-year-old son into custody on suspicion of beating Bryant with an ax handle. He is being held in the Yell County Juvenile Detention Center, police said.

Police said he is facing an attempted murder charge.

"He was struck in the head multiple times," Mountainburg Officer Andrew McIntosh said. "He had been hit with an ax handle."

5NEWS spoke with a woman who said she knows the teen well.

"It`s crazy," said Pam Karsten. "It`s sad it's just really sad. "He`s sweet he`s always been a sweet kid when I`ve been around him."

You must be shapeless, formless, like water. When you pour water in a cup, it becomes the cup. When you pour water in a bottle, it becomes the bottle. When you pour water in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Water can drip and it can crash. Become like water my friend.

I have went to school with his son for many years and for the past 3 I’ve noticed a sudden change. I don’t know what these people think now days or how someone could possibly do something like this. It’s terrible.

Your poor use of English is horrendous. Another product of the Arkansas Education system at its finest! Arkansas is 45th to 48th in the country Crack a book.

The comments become part of the story by describing the environment these people are living under. Unfortunately many of them come off sounding ignorant. There are plenty of fine people in that area but several of these are representative of them. If you don’t understand that concept then perhaps it is you that should leave.

That change is a warning sign. All of these people on social media that keep talking about how polite and nice he is would probably have a completely different story if he had shown up and school with a gun and killed a bunch of kids. He was supposed to be sent away in January but conned his way out of that. It’s just a matter of time before he kills someone if something is not done
