Arkoma Archery Sets Sights On State Tournament

Arkoma elementary and middle schools making just second trip to state meet

ARKOMA (KFSM) - Archery may not be the sport that immediately comes to mind when thinking but a group from Arkoma is hoping to bring home a state championship this weekend.

The Mustangs' elementary team won the top spot in region V while the middle school finished second and each qualified for the state meet in Tulsa on Friday (March 27) but this group of kids is learning more than just the pursuit of a trophy.

"I learned that if you shoot bow you have to stay consistent and just be as good as you can," Alex McLemore said.

"Just stay calm and talk to my friends between rounds to try to stay calm and not think about all the pressure and stuff," Josh Killion said.

"I try to help the students to utilize these skills to help them slow down in life and follow through with their expectations as far as goals," Arkoma coach Suzetta Wise said.

Even though most of the team is comprised of newcomers, all it took was one tryout to find out their love of the bow and arrow.

"When I was in third grade it just seemed really fun,"  Kate Johnson said. "My dad shoots a bow so it just seemed really cool."

"They had signups for our school so I came to practice and got on the team," Alexia Otts said.
