FORT SMITH (KFSM) - Crews are preparing to break ground on a $2 million trail along the RiverFront in Fort Smith Tuesday (Mar.31). Crews will start working to continue the trail for another 1.6 miles along the Arkansas River.

City leaders said this is a big project that will impact the community for years to come as development in downtown continues.

After six months of construction, the trail will start at the RiverPark events area, run right along the river, and up past the U.S. Marshal's Museum site where it will then connect to an existing trail. The 12 foot wide concrete trail will be lit, and will have many areas where you can stop and rest.

The trail is being paid for through a $1 million dollar grant given by the Walton Family Foundation, along with funds from a voter aprroved sales tax.

Leaders said the city as a whole is excited about his project, and what it means for the future of downtown Fort Smith.

"This was all part of our comprehensive plan, so this addresses two major compenents of the concept of quality of life and the whole trail system," said city administrator Jeff Dingman.

Construction of the trail is expected to wrap up in September of this year.

Anyone is welcome to come to the ground breaking ceremony. It all starts at 3:00 p.m. at the project site, which is north of the River Park events building.
