FORT SMITH (KFSM) -- Law enforcement agencies in our area are cracking down on distracted driving.
The Fort Smith Police Department is one of many agencies in our area taking part in a national campaign to use traditional and innovative ways to crack down on drivers who are texting.

"There's ways that you can be innovative just by working your assigned area every day and you learn tricks of the trade. You learn what to watch, how people try to sneak and try to hide the fact that they are using an electronic device. We don't give out our secrets, but we have ways of enforcement,” Sgt. Daniel Grubbs said.

Keith Holland says he's glad officers are on high alert.

“Unless it's a dire emergency -- pull over to use the phone. Because there are important people out there -- family, number one. And we don't want to see any accidents happening to our loved ones,” Holland said.

Texting isn't the only thing you can get in trouble for.

“Any type of electronic communication that you're doing on that phone. Which would be Twitter, which would be Facebook, which would be email,” Grubbs said.

"That's one thing you can definitely wait for. Get home, get on the computer, do it on the computer at the house,” Holland said.

Grubbs said even though the campaign ends April 15th, officers are always on the lookout for distracted drivers.
