FORT SMITH (KFSM)- A free child safety seat check station took place Saturday (April 11) at the Fort Smith Pavilion.

Hundreds of parents showed up for the annual event. Here, certified safety inspectors from the Fort Smith Police Department provided free inspections and replaced recalled and unsafe car-seats free of charge.

“I take it as the safety of the kids, making sure it`s all strapped in, you know, it`s what`s best for them is the way I see it,” Ashley Green, parent said.

Organizers said this year has been their biggest turnout yet. McCutchen Buckley- The Law Firm donated around 30 safety seats.

“The purpose is for children 3 to 14 years of age,” Joey McCutchen said. “Car crashes are the leading cause of deaths, so we`re trying to make our world safer for our young people, and the installation of car seats is so important, and not only that, some people have defective or broken car-seats, and they just need new ones.”

Improper installation of child safety seats could result in serious injury or death. McCutchen said it’s important to have the proper car-seat; make sure it’s age appropriate and properly installed.
