VAN BUREN (KFSM) - Students at a Van Buren Middle School paid tribute to one of their classmates Monday (Apr.13) after she was hit and killed by a vehicle on Saturday (Apr.11).

It was a somber start to the school day as students and teachers paid tribute to an eighth grader who died on Saturday. Many showed up wearing purple because that was the teen's favorite color.

When the school bell rang, the eighth graders were taken into the auditortium where teachers and counselors spoke with them about the tragedy.

Authorities said the accident also involved a 15-year-old, who's still in the hospital. Police aren't releasing anymore updates on the condition of that teen. Also, police aren't releasing either of the names, but said the accident happened in the 800 block of North 28th Street.

Dectective Jonathan Wear with  Van Buren Police Department said both teens were struck by a vehicle. They were taken to Children's Hospital in Little Rock, which is where the 13-year-old was pronounced dead.

Her teachers said she will be remembered for her bubbly personality. "She was a sweet girl who was very friendly to everyone," said instructor Debra West. "She was extremely interested in life and she will be greatly missed."

"There's so many students that will miss her," said choir teacher Sarah Sweatman.

Dectective Wear said the accident remains under investigation. He said it's unclear if the driver who hit the two teens will face any charges.
