LITTLE ROCK (KFSM) – The Arkansas Senate passed a bill on Wednesday (April 22) requiring a $5 fee every time someone takes the written exam to get their driver’s license, according to legislative records.
The bill is known as SB 633 and was filed by Sen. Bill Sample, R-Hot Springs. SB 633 was filed on Feb. 26.
If the legislation becomes law, it would require that applicants taking the written exam for a driver’s license pay $5 each time they take the test. According to the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration, it costs $5 to take the written exam the first three times it is taken. SB 633 aims to charge the $5 fee for every written test regardless of how many times it is taken.
SB 633 passed the Arkansas House of Representatives on March 30 by a vote of 87-2, and it cleared the Senate on Wednesday with a tally of 26-2, according to legislative records.
It now goes to Gov. Asa Hutchinson’s desk.
Supporters of the law say it will address the high failure rate among people taking the exam.
