ROGERS (KFSM) –  The Red Cross is honoring state Sen. Jon Woods and four others during its “Celebration of Heroes” event on Saturday in Rogers.

In January, Woods performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on a woman undergoing an apparent heart attack at the state Capitol in Little Rock. The woman, Christine Beems, survived.

Woods, pictured above, told 5NEWS he is proud to receive the award but doesn’t consider himself a hero.

“You can either stand there and watch or do something about it, and so I chose to do something about it,” the Springdale Republican said.

Four others are being honored at the event in the John Q. Hammons Convention Center, said Les Kimbrough, executive director of Red Cross Serving Northwest Arkansas. They are:

* Capt. Matt Perkins, a Bentonville firefighter who saved a woman from a burning home;
* Officers Nathan Hogan and Steven Jehl of the Fayetteville Police Department, who saved a man from a burning car;

* Fayetteville resident Jean Baltz, who donated 187 units of blood, which helped save 550 lives.

The event on Saturday, which is the annual fundraising dinner for the local Red Cross, begins at 6 p.m. Tickets are $125. For information, call 479-633-8330.
