Gentry Girls Soccer In First State Title Game

The Gentry girl’s soccer team has made it to the state tournament the past few years, but this is their first appearance in the state finals.

GENTRY (KFSM) - It's been a long time since a state title has been brought home to Gentry. Friday, the Pioneer girls soccer team will battle to do just that.

"I just hope that everyone can come out and support us for something that will potentially be the biggest thing that's ever happened in Gentry," senior Sofiya Stasiv said. "Because the last state championship we've ever had is probably back in the 80's."

The Gentry girls soccer team has been in the state tournament the past few years, but this is the first time they'll be stepping on the field for the finals.

"There was a little more confidence," coach Fabrizio Campagnola said. "They really believed they could do it. They got up there, and they got it done. You can tell when they got on the field that something is clicking, and everything is in the right place."

But that wasn't always the case for this team this season.

"We lost to Shiloh and we lost to Huntsville, and that kind of opened our eyes," senior Rachel Lawrence said. "We said hey we have to actually work for this because we aren't just getting this handed to us like we did last year. The competition has become more intense this year."

Like most teams, it's their bond they share off the field that makes them so successful on it.

"We're such a family that, I don't know it's so hard to describe," sophomore Amber Ellis said. "They're literally like my sisters. So, whenever we're on the field that connection, I guess, kind of helps us play better as a team."

They'll face Central Arkansas Christian on Friday at 10 a.m.  at the University of Arkansas soccer field for a chance at their first state title.
