CASS (KFSM)- A portion of State Highway 23, also known as the Pig Trail, in Franklin County is closed following a hill slide, according to the Franklin County Sheriff's Office.

The hill slide is approximately 19 miles north of Interstate 40 and 5.5 miles north of Cass, according to a media release from the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department. The closure includes 3.2 miles of Highway 23 between the Mulberry Mountain Lodge to the south and Fly Gap Road to the north. For a map, click here.

The AHTD has established a detour map and has placed electronic message boards to warn drivers about the closure.

No injuries were reported.

The county has experienced several days of heavy rain this month that flooded several roads and could have caused the landslide.

A slope supporting the roadbed on the east side of the highway is in the process of sliding and has caused large cracks to form in the northbound and southbound travel lanes, making them impassable, according to AHTD.

The three-mile section of the highway will remain closed until repairs can be made, which may take several weeks, the release states. A more definitive time-frame will be announced once AHTD engineers have had an opportunity to further evaluate the slide.
