FORT SMITH (KFSM) - One and six homeless people in Fort Smith are veterans, according to Next Step Homeless Services, and they hope a 5k run and walk will chip away at the issue. For a "5NEWS This Morning" segment that ran Saturday (May 23), anchor Jay Plyburn spoke to Amy Sherill who's the executive director of the organization.

Sherill said they want people of all fitness levels to participate in the "3rd Annual Honor And Duty 5K Run and Walk" scheduled for June, 27th. It will happen at Chaffee Crossing. Participants who register before June 7th get a free t-shirt and pay $25. After that date, the price will increase to $30.

Next Step Human Services has three locations in Fort Smith to house veterans: Buddy Smith Home, Easter Home, and the Gabriel House. They also have the Next Step Day Room to treat them daily.
