FORT SMITH (KFSM)- Homeowners on Riverlyn Drive in Fort Smith surveyed flood damage Tuesday (May 26) using canoes.
Chuck Fawcett has lived on Riverlyn Drive for 27 years and said there was four feet of water in his driveway.
“We [have] got to cut out all the wet sheet rock, take out all the cabinets and let it dry out for about a month." Fawcett said. "This is my swimming pool, covered in water, and as you can see we get up here to the window the house, you can see the water in the house.”
Fawcett even had a buoy from the Arkansas River float into his backyard, but he said he's seen worse.
“This is the same canoe that I took a CBS News commentator in 1990 when we had 5 feet of water in the house,” he said.
Next door Jerri Nixon was trying to figure out how she will get into her home.
"Sadness, but we knew what we were getting into when we moved here,” Nixon said. “We knew that [flooding] was a possibility."
Fawcett said he has no choice, but to just roll up his sleeves and start the rebuilding process. He estimates his property sustained between $60,000 and $70,000-worth of damage.
