LEFLORE COUNTY (KFSM) – The Leflore County Health Department is working to protect residents against dangerous bacteria following weeks of severe weather and flooding.
A registered nurse with the health department will administer tetanus vaccines, free of charge, to area residents on Wednesday (June 3).
The health department said they decided to do this because all of the recent severe weather in the area. They needed to make sure residents were up to date on their tetanus vaccines. That’s because there’s certain bacteria that could cause tetanus in the county’s soil and dust following the storms. If the bacteria enters someone’s body through a cut or puncture wound, it could lead to serious muscle spasms and even death.
The health department said that in times like these it’s important to just not take any chances, and instead make sure everyone is protected.
Leslie Covey, PIO with the health department wants to encourge people in the county to take advantage of this. “We take care of our community and we want to keep everybody healthy,” said Covey. She adds, ” We want to help with disasters because it’s vitally important to us here.”
The health department will also be giving out bottled water to residents who stop by.
The clinic will be at at the main office at Shady Point Schools Wednesday (June 3) morning from 10:00-12:00.
Then they will head to the Lower Elementary at Panama Schools on Wednesday afternoon from 1:00-3:00.
On Thursday (June 4), the clinic will be at City Hall in Pocola from 10:00 – 12:00.
Another thing to keep in mind, the county said they could really use blood donations, following the storms.
