TONTITOWN (KFSM)- In a special election Tuesday (June 9), Tontitown voters decided to keep an ordinance that disbanded the municipal fire department and transferred all fire services to the Tontitown Area Volunteer Fire Department.

Out of 309 votes, 188 people voted to keep the ordinance and 121 voted to repeal it.

The referendum that forced the special election was authored by Alderman Joe Edgemon after the Tontitown City Council voted March 3 to pass two ordinances that eliminated the city fire department and established a two-year contract with TAFD.

The TAFD took over all fire protection services on April 1 and all firefighters who worked for the city fire department were terminated.
