Adventure Arkansas: Hemmed-In-Hollow

This week’s Adventure Arkansas takes us on an intense quest to see the tallest waterfall between the Rocky Mountains and the Appalachians, Hemmed-in-Hollow.

This week's Adventure Arkansas takes us on an intense quest to see the tallest waterfall between the Rocky Mountains and the Appalachians, Hemmed-in-Hollow.

Such an awesome feat requires equally as awesome tour guides, so we headed out with none other than the team from Adventure Subaru. You can get there by land or by water. We came via the Buffalo River, which involved a three-quarter mile hike.

The other more popular route was by land, an adventure of its own, located in Compton in Newton county. If you come from the south, you can journey through the beautiful Ozark National Forest and Lost Valley area. If your timing is right, you get to see the herd of elk that call those parts home.

By land the hike is about 5 miles round-trip. With a difficulty rating of strenuous, it'll take you four to five hours so make sure you pack some food and make a day of it. The hike offers many photo ops, and you have the opportunity to take several different trails and see some smaller waterfalls along the way.

Halfway down the trail is a lookout, where you catch your first glimpse of the falls cascading off the bluff lines. While the falls merely trickle most of the year, all of the recent rain has made the 210 foot attraction stunning. Enclosed on three sides by the bluffs with Hemmed-in-Hollow Falls in the middle, the hike is definitely worth it to see the tallest waterfall in mid-America.
