BENTON COUNTY (KFSM) -  A man was killed by a lightning strike at Beaver Lake on Saturday (June 13), according to officials.

Officials said the 22-year-old man from Missouri was on a guided fishing tour with a guide and his wife when their boat was hit by lightning.

Authorities identified the fishing guide as Joseph Farkas, 57, of Missouri. Farkas operates a striper guide service.

Farkas was arrested at the scene, after authorties discovered he had prior warrants. Authorities said the arrest was not tied to the incident involving the lightning strike.

Jail records show charges dating back to July 14, 2013. They include boat collision or accident and operating a motorboat while intoxicated.

The incident happened just after 4 p.m. Saturday near Indian Creek at Beaver Lake, officials said. The boat was heading back to Lost Bridge Marina when it happened.

Eyewitnesses said the man was given CPR multiple times before emergency crews arrived.

"We were playing cards, my mom, my wife and I, and we looked down and they were giving CPR to a fella on the boat dock,” said Marty Adams, a camper who witnessed the response. “We watched for about five, six, or seven minutes, and the ambulance showed up and took over. They spent some time down there with him, and got him out of there.”

Officials said the man was taken to Northwest Medical Center in Bentonville, where he later died.

The name of the man killed has not been released.
