LAVACA (KFSM)- A Lavaca man is trying to figure out what he's going to do with his rescue animals as he prepares for the possibility of more flooding this week.

James Kaelin lives on Shamrock Drive, one of the hardest hit areas during the several days of torrential rain this past May.

"Y'all aren't afraid are ya? You will not be harmed, you have my word," Kaelin said as he showed 5NEWS his animals, which include wolves and peacocks.

Kaelin had 75 animals, but some of them died in the four feet of water that surrounded his home just a couple of weeks ago.

"A lot of guilt," he said. "I wasn't as prepared as I thought I was."

For Kaelin, the animals he rescues are part of his therapy after serving overseas and losing his daughter 40 years ago.

"Coming home to a quiet house was the most haunting thing to me in the world,” Kaelin said.

And although Kaelin is concerned, he said he doesn't plan to stop caring for his animals.

“We love them,” Kaelin said.

Kaelin said the first round of flooding did more than $100,000 in damage to his property, but since he doesn't have insurance he's going to have to rely on federal assistance.
