LOS ANGELES (KFSM)-  Center fielder Andrew Benintendi has become the first Arkansas Razorback to ever win the USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award.

Given to the nation’s best player, the award is considered to be baseball’s equivalent of the Heisman Trophy.

This caps off a string of honors for Benintendi in his sophomore season, which also included SEC Player of the Year, Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Year, Baseball America National Player of the Year and the Dick Howser Trophy.

Benintendi led the SEC in batting average (.380), home runs (20), on-base percentage (.489), slugging (.715) and walks (47). With his home run against Virginia in the College World Series, Benintendi became the first college baseball player to hit 20 home runs and steal 20 bases in a season since 2009.

The Boston Red Sox selected Benintendi in the first round of the MLB Draft with the seventh overall pick. He is expected to sign with the organization soon.
