For years, the future of fitness seemed that it would depend on new gadgets and sleek gyms, but now many people are taking a pre-historic route to stay in shape. All over the country, fitness buffs are reconnecting with their primal selves, replacing treadmills and dumbbells with rope, barbed wire, and heavy tires.

The trend has been called "Primal Fitness" or "Functional Fitness." While dragging ropes and climbing obstacles, fitness experts say its no less preposterous as peddling for hours on a stationary bike.

Trainers say more people realize that a good workout is more about sweating, working hard, achieving something, and just becoming stronger overall.
