If you missed the first 16 minutes of the Women’s World Cup championship match between the United States and Japan, you missed a lot.
The Americans’ Carli Lloyd scored three goals in the opening 16 minutes as team USA took complete control and rolled to a 5-2 win over Japan.
The championship is the United States’ first World Cup crown since 1999.
Lloyd found the back of the net in the third, fifth and 16th minute while Lauren Holiday beat the Japanese keeper in the 14th minute as the United States took a commanding lead before Japan could fully warm up.
Tobin Heath added a goal early in the second half (54th minute) to set the final tally for the Americans.
