FORT SMITH (KFSM) - Shelves at Yeagers Hardware stores across the River Valley are being stocked to the ceiling with household fans on Wednesday (July 8). Workers are getting geared up for their annual "fan drive" with the Salvation Army.

Hundreds of 20 inch household fans have been brought in and will be stocked at Yeagers. Then on Thursday (July 9), they'll go sale to the public for $14.95.

The way this fundraiser works is you can purchase a fan and drop it off in the Salvation Army truck that will be there in the parking lot in the afternoon, or later take the fan to their office in downtown Fort Smith.

Then all the fans donated will be given to low income families across the area. The Salvation Army wants to make sure the elderly and the very young are staying cool during the hot summer months of July and August.

According to Johnny Poff with the Salvation Army, "These are the people that are doing the best that they can in a bad situation and it's a little way we can help our neighbors."

These fans are large enough to circulate air, yet they're small enough so the families can store them away during the winter months. Also, they run on a single outlet in your home and last for about two years. Because of this, the families aren't allowed to get a fan every year.

All the families have to bring with them to the Salvation Army to pick up a fan is proof of residence and proof of income.

"The fans give them the ability to restain the heat and now that we're going into the hottest part of the summer, we really need help with these fans," said Poff .

All Yeagers locations including the two in Fort Smith, the one over on Main Street in Van Buren, and the one on West Center in Greenwood will be selling the fans.

Doors open at 7:00 a.m. and will close at 7:00 p.m.

If your unable to make it out to Yeagers on Thursday, but still want to help. You can drop a fan or a check off anytime at any Salvation Army location and they will get it to a familiy in need.
