FAYETTEVILLE (KFSM) - There are a lot of misconceptions about the sport of roller derby but the biggest may be that it's just a group of girls who are trying to take each other out on the skating rink.

"A lot of times, the first thing I hear after I tell someone I play roller derby is they say 'oh you throw elbows and stuff'," NWA roller derby president Jasmine Jetton said. "But actually, that's not the case. That's against the rules."

It's not just a sport for women though as both women and kids also get into the act.

"It's a full contact sport," Jetton said. "It's also unique because it's mostly adults that play the sport. That's not really common. Junior derby is just now starting to catch on."

Even though throwing elbows isn't allowed, blocks and hip checks are part of the game and a part of the strategy.

"Figuring out where you need to be and what time you need to be there because it's all strategy," Derred Scheperele said. "You've got two teams of five people playing offense and defense at the same time and you got to be able to see where you need to be before something happens."
